You dump, we pump................

Because we live so far out from the city, we don't have city water or city sewer.......our water comes from a well.....luckily ours is a great well and the stream it hit isn't high in iron or anything......it goes through a filter in the house and is safe for drinking (although we don't) and safe for using in cooking etc etc.......water pressure is good too :) the well works great and when the temperature gets below -20c we just switch on a lightbulb thats down the well and thats enough to keep the pipe down there unfrozen.

For sewage we have a septic system.........this means that all our waste (from toilets, washing machine, bath etc etc.......) goes through pipes into a tank under the ground which is in the woods near our house.................

This tank is concrete I think and has two sections separated by a wall that doesn't quite meet the top........waste goes into one side where it kind of sits until it dissolves into the water and flows over the separating wall bit into the other side of the tank...this watery waste then goes through a pipe that allows the watery stuff to seep out into the soil..................

Needless to say the trees in that part of the woods are very healthy....very fertile soil :)

It doesn't reall smell......occasionally if you walk down at the very bottom of our yard you get a slight whiff of something...............but it isn't foul smelling......................

Every 8 months we have a company come out with their tanker and they suck out the tank of all the main waste that hasn't dissolved in that way and they empty it out.....then I have to flush the toilets and run the taps to get some water into the system again and its all done :)

Simple :)

You have to be careful what you put down the toilet....tissue has to be septic system safe and thats about all you can put down........but we aren't too careful about amounts......and we flush for pee and poo :) some people say if its yellow let it mellow if its brown fluch it down...but I like to flush each time :)

We use a lot of water.....baths, showers, washing machine etc etc.........but thats actually a good thing because it keeps the septic system working well :)

In the pictures above you can see the truck down by the septic system........the area where the system is with its healthy trees, Abigail watching...and also the slogan on the truck that my kids love.........'You Dump - We Pump'..................

I totally recommend this company if you need one in this area.......it was the same man that came last time and he's great...answers all your questions and doesn't look at you as though you are crazy when you ask silly things :) $120.

Elk on the move.............

On the traffic news this morning they said that a herd of Elk was on the move on our road!!!!!! Silly me I didn't realise they were 'wild' around here....................I know they have them in Elk Island Park...we've watched them scoot across the frozen lake to Astotin Island before........and I know they have them in the National Parks in the Rockies but I didn't realise they were just wild around the place................

Kind of cool to think there is a herd so close........................

Unless of course they meant there is an Elk farmer and he was moving his herd but the way they said it, it sounded like the herd was wild and on the move and they weren't sure where to..........

Blah!!!!!

Today is not a good day in this household.....we are all VERY grumpy and tired and irritable..............we were in the centre of a nasty thunder storm last night for several hours (think strobe lighting, loud thunder, high winds, hail and lightening hitting ther field behind our house, the field at the side of our house, behind our neighbour Lori's house at the front of us and also not far to ther left of us either...basically circling us but LUCKILY not us or our land......anyway it was bad enough for us to get the kids from their beds and carry them downstairs........the storm had been with us a for a while before the weather network even mentioned it was happening.............

The wind was so bad that the window grills/ mesh thingies got sucked out!!!!

Laura - the storm was right over us for almost the entire evening and it wasn't until VERY late that it moved away..............I took a couple of pictures through the window but when I saw the lightning hit the field behind my house it spooked me and I was scared to go too near the window lol ......especially when we watched the meshy things from the windows get sucked out and blow across the yard.........................so I have two crappy pictures of sheet lightning that I took before going downstairs!!!!

All I kept thinking was that my lovely little house has no protection!!!! And when we had been having dinner the birds around here were acting crazy which kind of freaked us all out to begin with......so many birds and they were acting bizarre and then they vanished!

One good thing though was that we didn't lose power...didn't lose satelite signal for tv and after a quick phone call this morning my internet access was back up and running :)

Anyway......late night = miserable kids and miserable me.......

Today is my Nephews 5th birthday.......so we phoned and said Happy Birthday and Abigail got to sing over speaker phone while in England they were singing and blowing out the candles on the cake so that was perfect timing!

Then Laurence chats with everyone over there and I can't believe the things he is saying.......that he's done nothing lately...that we never do anything.....that he has to do workbooks (????????????????????)

Makes me kind oif wonder why I bother doing anything with them at all :( I know its because he's tired and its his weird middle child way of getting attention and kind of showing off.....but it hurt. I think we do a lot......even on days at home we make things or play games or do stuff outside.......

His best friends parents work all day then come home and go out with their friends...his friends are on their own all the time........................weekdays and weekends...they never seem to even see their parents......

Anyway.....I know its because he's tired and grumpy and I shouldn't take it personally..........

Bed early tonight.......for ALL of us!

Bribery with sausages.......

My girls....Amber and Rosie........Amber is 'blowing coat' right now......meaning all her white under fur is coming out.....you can see in the pictures the big lumps of loose white fur coming through her golden outer coat........you groom her and then its there again....and my yard is covered in little wads of white soft fur...................

For anyone ever considering a golden...these are the things you need to know BEFORE you get one........they don't just shed the odd hair...once or twice a year they 'blow coat- and lose big lumps of under fur.......all over your house!!!!! You can groom and groom but its there..........if you are overly house proud or don't have time for regular grooming, then they aren't the dog for you............

I don't mind....they're worth it :)

In the pictures above they are watching Lloyd who has a plate of sausages for them.....naughty really but they get so much exercise it shouldn't matter lol! And it was a great way to get them to be together for a picture!!!

Strippers!!!!!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/norfolk/5275506.stm

What a cool old lady.........a stripper for her 102nd birthday!!!!

And what a fab nursing home to do that for her!!!

Playing outside and cooling off................

We spent the afternoon outside enjoying the lovely hot day.........

Limbo dancing..........................

The children had a blast this afternoon cooling off under the sprinkler and hose............they played limbo for ages......I love watching them play.......they play so well together..........I love how homeschooling has brought them close as siblings................it was 29c today..........a storm is coming in now to cool things down which will be good :) No hay bale pics today though....maybe tomorrow night.....................

procrastinating............again...............

We got these trees at the Canada Day festival in town...they are given away in celebration of Arbor Day..........well they have been sitting in mugs on my kitchen window ever since and I kept meaning to repot them.......today finally we did! Susannah helped me get them done and now they are ready to grow a little more in their post inside over the winter before we plant them with Christophers in the front field.................

Another job I can cross off of the to-do list yay!!!

Swainsons Hawk.............

We get a lot of birds of prey flying over our house but they are often too fast for me to get my camera, change lense and get ready to take the picture.....Laurie saw this Hawk coming over from the back though so I had time to get organized..............By the time I was ready it was hovering above the house and front yard circling....such grace............................beautiful.......

These Hawks were named after William Swainson who was an early 19th Century British illustrator of natural history................

In Memory....Robert Barrington-Leigh............

I'm lost for words and so, so sad.

A quote from the website:

Dear friends,
Robert was found dead in the N Saskatchewan River at ~11:00 a.m. this morning and identified by police around midday.

We are holding a vigil for volunteers and community tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the Mill Creek Pool Parking lot, in order to give our appreciation for the amazing outpouring of support this week.

Thank you.

silly me....................

I really should have checked for electric fencing before I peed......

My lightbulb moment..............

I figured out why I blog so much.....apart from my obsessional personality lol........blogging is my new scrapbooking! I used to scrapbook sooooo much (I over-filled 16 albums in one year) but I often left spaces for journaling that I never got around to doing...plus I got bored with it all as I often do lol! But blogging is scrapbooking!!! Except its fast and easy and I can instantly do the journaling and instantly share my pictures and journaling with family and friends far away..........and scrapbooks take up so much room........

Blogging is the new scrapbooking :)

For me at least!

bye bye Monday..............

Last nights sunset...........

Todays Abby-ism................

Abigail was lying in bed beside me this morning, all sleepy..........she looked over at the clock, which said 8:37 and then groggily said ' Oh I'm a bit late for Family Guy...it starts at 8' and with that she rolled over and out of bed and went downstairs.................

Its going to be 29c today and Abigails choice of outfit is a bumblebee Halloween costume.......perfect!!

Its Tuesday!

Chris should be at work. We should be at the homeschool picnic and park day...but here we are at home.......Chris has swapped his work day for Thursday and we arranged with friends to meet for a picnic another day instead of today........I'm not sure any of us are in the mood for group stuff today.....

My neighbours hay was baled yesterday so this evening I plan to take pictures of the kids by them........I want them all dressed fairly similar....blue jeans and white t-shirt...............casual pics in the evening light..........we'll see if we can get Chris to smile.....he doesn't like having his picture taken much...typical teen that doesn't smile often lol!

My blog notebook was busy this morning.......what did I write down? hhmmmmmm Air Canada is starting a direct route to London Heathrow from Edmonton this October........3 days a week and then daily from April.......their cheap company Zoom does a direct flight in the summer but not all year...so this is a good thing....might mean my sister will finally fly!

Tomorrow is my Nephews 5th birthday. He had his party on Saturday at an indoor playground. Abigail will phone him tomorrow to say hello and Happy Birthday.............

I just love the music on the commercial for Rice Krispies...the one where the mom is making Rice Krispy cakes with her two little girls...what kind of music is that????? Anyone have a recommendation?????

Everything else I wrote is for another post!
