Oscars....

I've spent the evening sat here with the three oldest kids watching the Oscars ceremony while I'm blogging....so happy that 'Up' won a few things....and I think 'Precious' deserved all it won.  Still a few more Oscars to be given out....so I'm still watching.  can't wait to see what they say tomorrow about how the stars reacted - and what they wore etc etc :)  George Clooney seemed a little grouchy earlier (??)

Did you watch? What were your reactions???

Hitting the trails....

In the nature centre...

Funny face from Abby - I was looking up at the bats who were in the top of the cave hanging :)

We seem to have soooo many ladybugs at our house lately - they are coming out because of the warm temperatures but they are dying because of the cold at night:

Salamanders are so cute aren't they?  Smiley little things:

First stop..

A riding centre in the city...

Snow Valley

This is one of the ski hills in our city - they have snow making machines and start making snow as soon as the temperature drops in the Fall before it really starts to snow - so they can build up a good base.  It can be well into Spring and all the snow can be gone everywhere else but there will still be a few piles of snow in there for a little while :)

It was busy as we drove by today!

;)

Over 7 years I've been here and this name still makes me giggle.....

Porch fun.

And on the topic of porches - I wonder if the porch guys will show up tomorrow to finish the porch railings.....

Got milk?

Our neighbours Llama has had another baby.  They are so cute when they are little.  Not so cute and friendly when they are bigger and chase us down the road......lol!

I think they were expecting her ;)

Dinosaurs and the gifts they left behind....

On thin ice...

Lloyd and Sam looking out over the frozen North Saskatchewan River....

With our warm temperatures of late, and many parts of the North Saskatchewan river already melted, we were really surprised to see this truck and small crane down on the ice under the bridge today - especially as the ice there already looked quite watery and glassy!!

Well, I guess they know what they are doing ;)

Soon the river will thaw completely.  This river is the only one to flow INLAND!!!  It flows from the Rocky Mountains and come Spring the water levels will rise from the snow melting in the mountains.  It will thaw but there will be big chunks of ice coming down the river for a while....

For a while people will risk it and walk on the ice - often people fall through and quite often they let their dogs continue to walk on the ice or get too close and dogs often need to be rescued in Spring from the cold water where they run on to the thin ice and fall through :(

STAY OFF!!!

Another beautiful Alberta day.

Whip it!

Last night we all sat and watched Whip it! It was a good movie - all about roller derby. I think what I love most about it is that it shows that women - even in their late 30's can take part in a sport as fun and as thrilling and as ruthless!! My friend Christie asked me to join Roller derby with her a couple of years ago and I was really keen to do it - except they needed sooooo much commitment! It wasn't just a couple of nights a week - it was several times a week not including games. I just couldn't commit to that much training at that time.

There is now another team (several) in the city and they don't all require as much commitment. One only asks for two nights a week - which isn't so bad! It would be FAB if my local town could start one! THEN I'd be all set! If you don't know much about roller derby, you can read all about it

HERE  and if anyone is interested in learning about all the necessary equipment, or purchasing some - then you can buy all you need at United Cycles in Edmonton OR you can buy online and read up all about roller derby too HERE

And even if you aren't that interested in roller derby, this is just a fun movie - full of teen angst - parent- daughter tribulations, growing up in a small town, young love,  finding your passion and standing up for what you believe in!  Enjoy!
