Mmmmmmmmmmmm

This stew is goooooooooooood!!!!

definitely EWwwwwww

OK I can't look any more......I am shivering and am creeped out YUCK!!! I hate hate HATE spiders....I love that we don't get big spiders here..............not like back home.

But I just can't surf to find out what these spiders are any more because its nasty!

So if anyone can tell me about these weird 8 legged freaks then please let me know!

Eeeewwww or wow????

Abigail and I went out for a walk, to check for eggs (we got 3) and potter about outside with the dogs. While we were outside we noticed the solar cover for the swimming pool was filled with rain water. On closer inspection we saw each pool pf water on it was filled with spiders...they appear dead for the most part but each has a weird big white egg sack type thing attached to its belly.

I HATE spiders and am now itching like crazy and sure they are all crawling over me (lol) but its fascinating too...I have no idea what type of spider this is or why they lay in water like that......I got a picture of one with diamonds on its back, but the ones actually in the water don't look like this diamond one.....

If anyone knows what these spiders are please can you let me know.....and also let me know if they are poisonous........

ewwwww - but kind of fascinating too!

Challenge of the Homestead

Yesterday at the library we went into the book sale and bought a LOT of books. One that I bought for myself is called 'Challenge of the Homestead - Peace River Letters of Clyde and Myrle Campbell 1919-1924'

This book is just wonderful!!!! It is basically about a man from Ohio who travelled up to Canada to homestead.....once in Edmonton he looked around for the right land and finally chose to go up just West of Grande Prairie. He bought a quarter section for $10 and with the help of the families he lived beside, he built up a homestead and then sent for his wife and daughter to join him. The book is basically all his letters home to his wife and daughter telling them about his journey and experiences. It also has old photographs of the early days and the homestead and cabin they built. He starts each letter like 'My Own Precious Sweethearts' and jokes to his wife about her becoming his assistant fence builder. He sends clippings from the Eatons catalogue showing her things he has bought for her and draws designs for their cabins...its all included in the book.

He describes Alberta weather as "It's a stern country and the winters are cold and sunshiny. Two days last winter the mercury dropped to 72 below zero! Some frost I'd say! But everybody says its so dry that you don't notice the cold at all. Well I'll play polar bear if I have to....anything to win!"

Further into the book once Myrle has joined him in Canada, the letters are from them as a afmily to their parents in Ohio......

Wonderful stuff! So personal and real and funny and .................I am just loving it!

Lloyd would have been a fab homesteader.....he hates to sit still, enjoys the farm work and hard work and is so reliable and hardworking. I think I would have enjoyed it to.......a very different life but I would have been happy.

This is one fab book I totally recommend! I couldn't put it down yesterday when I started it!

My Tuesday

So this morning I woke up at 6am when Lloyd was leaving for work. I had my coffee and watched Global for a while and then fell back to sleep at 7:30 which was NOT a good idea.....when I nap I wake up groggy and bad tempered.

I got up and dressed and had brekky and managed somehow to have all the animals fed and the kids fed and dressed and washed and ready by 9:30. We drove into town (the highway was EMPTY this morning...its usually quiet but this morning I didn't see one car at all on my side) and I dropped Chris at work before heading to the homeschool group. It was a nice morning.....busy for during the summer really.....nice to catch up with everyone and the children usually have fun there.

I got given three big boxes of National Geographic magazines which is fab......great to read and great for all kinds of projects........they used to belong to L and she was telling me how she has hundreds and they are all in order!!! Too funny! Although I used to be bad like that with my scrapbooking magazines.....

Thats a point...I have hundreds of scrapbooking magazines.....what should I do with them?????

Chris stopped in on our way and checked on the dogs he is looking after for a local family.........they were fine. Their owners called last night to see how they are doing.......

Sam and a few other little ones at the HS group enjoyed playing in the big muddy puddles......one little girl fell totally in the mud and had to be stripped....Sam fell but caught himself with his hands and so just his hands were muddy...he didn't like it much.......I washed him up but he had to go shoeless into sobeys and had mud splattered everywhere on his clothes and my jeans are caked in mud where his feet pressed against me..............he does love mud and puddles so much!

After homeschool group we ran to sobeys and grabbed a few groceries and then headed home, had lunch and have basically not done much since.......in fact after posting about my new book I plan to sit and read it on the porch for a while.......

Thats my Tuesday so far!

Mondays sunset for you.........

Fudge!

Last night I made this Olde English style fudge.....its a lovely grainy vanilla fudge which tastes a little like Scottish tablet if you've ever had that (yummy!)

I just had to tell Susie to take it away from me because I would have eaten until I was sick......... I love this stuff and haven't made it in years. OMG its good. And soooo easy to make. And sooooo low calorie its amazing (lol)

You need

  • 1kg white cane vanilla granulated sugar
  • 1 tin (appx. 400g) sweetened condensed milk
  • 100g unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup fresh milk to damp sugar
In large pan mix all ingrediants. Bring to boil continually stirring slowly (don't let it burn to bottom if it burns a little turn it down. ONce boiling turn heat to lowest level and leave for 20 minutes stirring occasionally. After 20 minutes stir fast until thicker. Pour into buttered tray. Leave to set. Leave in fridge over night then cut into cubes.

YUM!!!

Foot in mouth disease....

Some people just don't think before they speak do they??? I sometimes want to stand there with my mouth gaping open because I think some people just say the stupidest things......it's like they really don't care what they say or they just don't realise how stupid they are......anyway...one of these dorks crossed my path (again) today. I am still left trying to figure out whether she is stupid or just says stupid things without thinking......................

yummy smelly hair.......

I just LOVE the smell of Fructis Sleek and Shine anti frizz serum.....I have had several comments on the lovely smell of my hair since I started using it...........and it leaves your hair all smooth and soft.........it's FAB stuff!
