Guy Fawkes Night

“Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder, treason and plot,
I know of no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.”

Tonight, November 5th, is Guy Fawkes Night. An (traditionally) British 'holiday' remembering the 'gunpowder plot'...when Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators plotted to kill King James I during the opening of parliament. The plot was foiled and Guy Fawkes captured.....

Since then, children make a 'guy' out of old shirts and pants stuffed with newspaper or straw...a HUGE bonfire is lit in each town, and people gather to watch the 'guy' burn.....there are firework displays and traditional foods like baked potatoes (cooked in the fire), parkin, toffee apples, treacle toffee and tomato soup are eaten around the fire to keep warm.....
